The following is a letter to the ISA Members from Baron Stander of the Timewarp Surfing Museum,

Durban, South Africa:



Hi all – I hope you all enjoyed your stay in Durban. Let me take this opportunity of thanking you

and your fellow team members for the great times enjoyed together – your friendship was greatly

appreciated – the vibes were the best, and the bond with the surfers was ‘far out’ in more ways

than one. Thank you for all the gifts left behind at the Timewarp – they will be cherished forever.

Not only did the World Surfing Games bring in an economical boost to the city of Durban, it also greatly benefited the people of Durban in general. The following is a letter to the WSG Organizing Committee from the Blood Donor Clinic in Durban:



On behalf of the management and staff of the South African National Blood Service, I would like

to thank you most sincerely for hosting blood donor clinics at the recent World Surfing Games in

Durban. We are very pleased to report on a most successful promotion. A total of 177 people

volunteered to donate and we were able to collect 128 units of blood. This was a particularly

pleasing result as this figure included 51 people who had never donated before. The response

from the public has made a significant impact on the current blood stocks, and for this we are

most grateful. Congratulations on the success of the Games and we wish you well in future

endeavors.

Shark Attack Danger Exaggerated in Press?

From all of the recent newspaper articles the past year about shark attacks on swimmers, people may be

surprised to learn that shark attacks have not risen at all lately; in fact, unprovoked shark attacks in the

USA have declined slightly, from 56 in 2000 to 55 in 2001. Of the 55 people attacked by sharks last year,

three people died. The old cliche still holds true: If you choose to go to the beach in an automobile, your

chance of being hurt in an accident is many times more likely than your chances of being attacked by a

shark at the beach. By the way, over 100 million sharks worldwide were attacked and killed by people in

BRAZIL
SURF AND BEACH SHOW 2002
June 25 ? 28, Sao Paulo, Brazil



For the first time the maximum entity of Surf Administration on the National level, the Confederacao

Brasileira de Surf, (CBS) participated in the main trade show for Latin America, the Beach and Surf Show

2002. The show was held from the 25 through the 28th of June at the Imigrantes Event Center in Sao Paulo,

Brazil.



The stand was generously donated by Groupo Waves, the organizer of the event. The CBS invited

everybody present to stop by the stand where all were received with honor. They showed a CD of the

Brazilian Delegation that participated in the Quiksilver ISA World Surfing Games 2002 in Durban, South

Africa, this past May/June and what is new within the CBS.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC


Events: LATIN AMERICAN SURFING PRO & ENCUENTRO ECO SURF 2002

October 18 ? 28, 2002. Playa LTI, Cabarete, Dominican Republic (North coast)



The Federacion Dominicana de Surfing (FEDOSURF), FUNDATO and the Asociacion Latinoamericana

de Surfing (ALAS) extend to all the brother countries of Latin America a cordial invitation to participate in

the Latinoamericano de Surfing LATIN PRO and the Encuentro Eco-Surf 2002.



The program will start with the annual Encuentro Eco-Surf. This will be a competition or international

exchange in which all the present teams can participate. This will include the US Team, which will be

visiting for the second time. The program will continue with the Latinoamericano de Surfing Latin Pro

which will have US$7,000.00 in prizes.



Teams will have to make the inscription payment on Friday, October 18th. The cost of the subscription will

be US$130.00 (except judges). This payment will include airport transportation ? hotel ?airport, stay at the

Hotel LTI Sol de Plata (4 stars) with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. It also includes the subscription

to Latinoamericano de Surfing Latin Pro and the inscription to Encuentro Eco-Surf.



The confirmation of participation of Teams and the list of competitors should be sent no later than the 30th

of August, 2002. Delegation Size: 6 Open Surf, 4 Junior Surf, 4 Bodyboard, 2 Ladies Bodyboard, 2 Ladies

Surf and 2 Longboard

ECUADOR


Event: ECO-CHALLENGER SURFING PLAYAS

July 20 ? 21, 2002, Faro Beach ? Ecuador



The Federacion Ecuatoriana de Surf (FES) prepares for the third annual championship scheduled for mid-

July in Faro Beach, located in Canton Playas. The participation of the best surfers in the country is

foreseen as the scoring points from this game in the tournament that will define the positions in the ranking

for the National Title 2002. The chosen area for the tournament is a straight and considerably long wave

with an average height of 3 ? 5 feet and its course gives the surfer the opportunity to perform many

different maneuvers.



At this event, the FES will launch the Conservation and Protection Program for the direct access to beach

areas and their surrounding environment (Programa de Conservación y Protección de los Accesos Directos

a la Playas y sus Entornos). This program counts with the support of the Olympic Solidarity of the IOC

and is managed by the Commission of Sports and Environment in conjunction with the FES. The President

of the Ecuador Olympic Committee will assist, as well as economist Danilo Carrera and other Canton

authorities.

EUROPEAN SURFING FEDERATION


EUROPEAN TOUR OF BODYBOARD 2002 (ETB 2002)



After 4 years of ETB open only to Europeans, from this year, the ETB 2002 is open to Europeans and Non-

European bodyboarders. Bodyboarders from all over the world are welcome in ETB.



The event in Las Palmas, Spain will be in November. More details will be given by the next event in

Portugal (August 9 ? 11). The Las Palmas event is not confirmed and if it is not possible to organize this

competition, the ETB 2002 Open will end in Lacanau, France in September.

NEW ZEALAND


Event: RIPCURL GROMSEARCH 2002/2003



This event is a new initiative in New Zealand which will run national surfing events for male and female

grommets, 16 and under. A series of THREE events has been confirmed and these events will all be held

in school holiday periods to allow maximum participation. All events will incorporate Boys U16, U14 and

U12 and Girls U16, U14 and U12. Entry numbers will be kept at a maximum of 100 and entry fee will be

$45, which includes a T-shirt. The series will be visiting three of New Zealand?s most high profile surfing

regions with events in Taranaki (July 13 ? 14), Gisborne (September 28 ? 29) and Muriwai (December 14 ?

15). Surfing New Zealand will organize the event infrastructure and the region?s boardriders club will host

each event.



Ripcurl?s Leon Parking said of the new series, ?The Ripcurl Gromsearch follows on from the success of the

Australian Gromsearch series, which is now the leading Grommet program in Australia. It is designed to

be a young, fun series which will be entertaining as well as providing career direction and contest

experience for New Zealand?s grommet age surfers.?

SOUTH AFRICA


Team South Africa meets the Minister of Sport


Tuesday, June 4th, 2002 was a very historic day for South African Surfing. The South African WSG Team

members, Jason Ribbink (team captain), Warwick Wright (gold medalist), Gigs Celliers (silver medalist),

Heather Clark (bronze medallist), Jason Lee Isaacs and Robin de Kock, WSG 2002 Organizer went to the

South African Parliamentary Chambers and were welcomed by the Minister of Sport in front of the Deputy

President and all the Members of Parliament. The Minister congratulated the team on winning the World

Championship and noted this in the Parliamentary records. All the Members of Parliament gave Team

South Africa applause. The President of South Africa was supposed to be there, but unfortunately had to

attend the funeral of one of his colleagues and could not attend.

Barons Benefit Night


Since the WSG, Baron Stander of the Timewarp Surfing Museum has been informed that he will be no

longer required as a surf reporter on the local radio station after doing the job for over 30 years. The station

is ?changing focus.? All his friends are holding a benefit evening for him on July 11th so if there is anyone

in the ISA family who would like to pledge funds to Barons Benefit Night, this can be done through

Surfing South Africa.

Event: QUIKSILVER GROMMETS SERIES AT WATERGATE BAY

June 28 – 29, 2002 ? Watergate Bay, United Kingdom



Watergate Bay provided home victories for Newquay surfers Tom Butler and Leon Mansfield in the finals

of the UK Quiksilver Grommet Series event. Tom and Leon won a trip to southwest France to compete

against Europe?s best young surfers in the Quiksilver Grommets Trophy, to be held in Capbreton, near

Biarritz, 2 ? 4 August. Tom, 13, beat Bude?s Reubyn Ash, Jayce Robinson, and Sam Burkett to win the

Under 14 division. In the Under 10 division, Leon was victorious against Oliver Routledge, George

Picking and Tim Robey.



Dave Reed, Operations Director of the British Surfing Association was delighted with the number of

entries for the contest. ?For many of these kids, this is their first introduction to the sport at a competitive

level. This is the biggest turnout we?ve ever had in this age group, which has got to be encouraging for

British surfing,? he said. ?The main objectives of this new format of competition is to develop young

surfing talent at national level, and to give kids the opportunity to compete against each other at European

level,? said a Quiksilver spokesman. Results below:
